Night At The Infirmary Sanity System

What Sanity Does

Sanity is the hidden timer on every Night At The Infirmary shift. When it empties, the run collapses — jumpscares hit harder, tells blur, and the night ends early. UPD 2 made Sanity management a build choice: classes now pad starting Sanity, reduce drain, soften drained effects, or amplify Sanity gains from treating and exorcising.

Read this page with the classes guide and survive shifts. Patch framing lives on UPD 2.

What Drains Sanity

  • Jumpscares from admitted Anomalies or mid-operation reveals.
  • Staring too long at cursed photos, CCTV zooms, or disturbing feeds (still true from UPD 1 desk habits).
  • Failed or slow operations that leave you exposed in the ward.
  • Passive drain while meters are already low — some classes reduce this rate (The Survivor, Therapist team perk, Plague Doctor effect reduction).

Rejecting at the desk with the three-layer loop still prevents the worst drains. Detection workflow: detect anomalies.

How to Recover Sanity

The UPD 2 recovery loop is treat → clean → move. Completing operations and clearing beds restores Sanity. Faster operating and wheelchair perks (Surgeon, Plague Doctor, Receptionist) shorten the time between gains. Head Doctor and Therapist amplify treat gains; Exorcist converts successful crucifix work into Sanity and a short mobility burst.

When an Anomaly is already inside, stop the normal procedure and use the Wooden Crucifix — continuing surgery into a jumpscare is how meters crater. Combat timing: beat anomalies.

Class Perks That Touch Sanity

  • Rookie / Head Doctor — higher starting Sanity.
  • The Survivor — lower start, but strong drain reduction and walkspeed.
  • Therapist — team-wide treat gains and drain reduction.
  • Plague Doctor — reduced effect from a drained meter plus speed to recover faster.
  • Exorcist — Sanity from exorcising when the ward goes wrong.

Practical Shift Habits

  1. Never skip photo/CCTV just to “save Sanity time” — a wrong admit costs far more Sanity than one extra check.
  2. After a jumpscare, prioritize a clean treat cycle before re-entering long CCTV stares.
  3. In squads, put Therapist or Ward Assistant on a support player so the whole lobby benefits.
  4. Solo: Plague Doctor or leveled Surgeon keeps the recover loop tight.
  5. Watch BPM and temperature while operating — 0 BPM, extreme spikes, or temps outside ~36–37°C mean crucifix, not more surgery.

Beginners should finish beginner and first night before optimizing class Sanity math.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens when Sanity hits zero?

The shift fails. Low Sanity also makes jumpscares and tells harder to handle before the meter fully empties.

What is the fastest way to recover Sanity in UPD 2?

Complete treatments and clean beds quickly. Classes that boost operating and wheelchair speed shorten the recovery loop.

Which class is best for Sanity?

Head Doctor and Therapist for gains; Plague Doctor for softened drained effects; The Survivor for drain reduction.

Do desk checks still matter for Sanity?

Yes. Rejecting Anomalies at reception prevents the biggest mid-ward Sanity crashes.

When should I use the Wooden Crucifix?

When a patient already inside shows wrong BPM, temperature, or behavior mid-operation — stop treating and exorcise.
